Mastering jump rope skills: How to perfectly execute footwork transitions

To get started, stand with your feet close together and hop on your right foot, touching your left toe lightly to the floor in front of you. Repeat this on your right foot, then bring your left foot up and touch the floor, making a complete circle as you bring your feet in and out several times, like doing star jumps with your feet. Keep your right foot on top of the left foot at all times and imagine it like a pendulum, swinging in an uninterrupted back-and-forth, circling movement. Try this several times, then switch to your left foot and make a complete circle in the other direction.


Once you've got the hang of that, try stepping back in place to step forward, using the same foot for this transition. Start by stepping back on your right foot, then place your right foot in front of you and bring it down. Then step back with your left foot to step forward with your right foot, using the same foot for the transition. Repeat this sequence a few times, making sure to use the same foot each time you step forward or back. When you're ready, jump up and down on both feet together, keeping your feet close together.


This is a great way to get your heart rate up and really get the blood pumping. Try jumping for 30 seconds at a time, then rest for 10 seconds and repeat. As you get better, you can increase the length of your jumping intervals and decrease your rest time.
